The State of Online Grocery Retail in Europe 2015

Executive Summary

This year’s report provides an in-depth study on key online grocery retail trends across Western Europe, the US and a special report on fast-growing emerging market India. Last year (2014) our research showed that the global eGrocery market was heating up fast, but that the industry was still at an early stage, with low consumer penetration and online sales. Let’s see what changed;

Across 2014 the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the US showed remarkable double-digit growth of online grocery sales. The Dutch market grew fastest, with +55% growth. The French market grew slowest, but still reached an impressive +25% annual growth rate. Overall 16% of European consumers bought online groceries throughout 2014 compared to 13% in 2013. With market value and consumer adoption rising quickly, the eGrocery market achieved significant growth across the year. Key drivers were successful new business models and more players entering the market, thereby driving the market’s competitiveness.
